Self Led Challenges

Eight Peaks Challenge

Sponsor: Red Kite Fostering

You can take part in this event, either walking or running. You find your own way round, using a map. Go either clockwise or anticlockwise, it's your choice. The winner is the person or team who collects the most clipper marks and in the case of a tie, the fastest time around. Registration and info sheets with marker cards available from 9:00am till 12 noon from the event centre start: Red Kite Centre, The Meads, Kington, HR5 3DQ. You can check back in until 6:00pm and collect the Eight Peaks Challenge Certificate which will show your recorded time. The Event Centre will close at 6:00pm. The eight peaks are to the north and west of Kington and each gives a different perspective of the amazing views of the area. They range in height from 303 to 426 meters with Kington being at 170m. On each hill there will be a clipper to mark your card. There are also three extra clippers to assist you in keeping to footpaths and not stray.

Explorer map 201 will be needed for this event.

There is an oak board displaying the winners names and times in the dining room of the Oxford Arms, Kington.

Sponsor: Red Kite Fostering

The Three Peaks Challenge is a timed event that starts and finishes at Red Kite HQ (SO 300 568), Kington. Participants have to find and identify three targets on Hanter Hill (SO 252571), Yewtree bank overlooking Gladestry (SO 238553) and the summit of Hergest Ridge (SO 256562). This is a fun fitness event for all shapes and sizes. The furthest point from the start is approximately 4 miles and allowing for wandering around aimlessly the whole event could be achieved in under 10 miles and an hour and a half for the fastest runner! Alternatively you could take a picnic and enjoy the breathtaking views from this nationally renowned beauty spot. All finishers get a medal and free refreshments.

The Walton Wobbler Cycle Event

Sponsor: Red Kite Fostering

This is an eight peak challenge with a difference. Taking place the day after the original Eight Peak Challenge that takes in all the high points north of Kington, the Walton Wobbler will take you up the steepest hill climbs that surround the Walton Bowl and challenge your bike riding skills on the descents. This bike ride is not a race, the only person you need to beat is yourself. This ride is not for the faint hearted! Covering thirty miles with eight steep or very steep climbs along mainly single track roads with one long off road section this ride is meant to be a test of fitness and determination. Participants are advised to use mountain bikes or cross over hybrid bikes as the terrain and descents make it unsuitable for road bikes. Everyone taking part will receive maps and instruction sheets. A bike mechanic and broom wagon will be available in case of breakdowns and mishaps. The start and finish is at Red Kite HQ and all those that complete the course will receive a medal and free refreshments. First riders can leave Red Kite at 9am, last entry on the day 11am.
