Please bring a packed lunch, drinks and snacks, plus money for tea and biscuits. Travel to and from start point by own car.
In May 1904 an intrepid band of walkers alighted at Lyonshall station. They were members of the Woolhope Club, led by the celebrated Herefordian Alfred Watkins; photographer, writer, inventor and promoter of the theory of Ley Lines . To celebrate the recent centenary of Watkins’ iconic book The Old Straight Track, we will retrace their steps across fields and down lanes to Almeley, stopping at various historical sites to compare them with the images he and photographer Henry Winterbourn took that day, connecting us across time to the historical landscapes of this beautiful area. We will call for tea at a place of worship in Almeley that recently celebrated its 350th anniversary, before returning to Lyonshall by a different network of paths and lanes. We will see two churches, two chapels, the sites of three castles, a variety of intriguing earthworks, and fine views of the Wye Valley and beyond.
